DO YOU KNOW "THỐT NỐT" NUT?

DO YOU KNOW "THỐT NỐT" NUT?

Cây thốt nốt is Palmyra Palm tree (Borassus flabellifer), one of the Sugar palm group, found from Indonesia to Pakistan. Quite familiar in Cambodia, this sugar palm nut proves rare in Vietnam except in the Mekong delta. This kind grandma sold tasty cakes cooked with this sweet palm sugar. The palmyra palm is a symbol of Cambodia. It grows near the Angkor Wat temple and is a very common palm, found all over the country. Here in Hà Tiên, a town in Kien Giang province by the Cambodian border, I found inspiration for writing in 2008 a prose poem entitled "I dream of a country..." for my trilingual photobook Vietnamese We - Người Việt Nam chúng tôi - Nous autres Vietnamiens.
